Birmingham wayfaring from Ira

Birmingham awakes with us

Birmingham awakes with us

The landscape is not a surface to be crossed. To know is to penetrate the surface of the landscape. (Fleishman)

meLê – Observe-Wonder-Perceive at Sparkhill Area

Gettingt there – hopping into the right bus

All knowledge systems are intgrated laterally, not vertically. We know as we go from place to place. (Fleishman)

120220091261

Human beings inhabit discursive worlds of culturally constructed significance. Through being inhabited rather than through its assimilation to a formal design specification, that the world becomes a meaningful environment for people. (Ingold)

– Empty streets, people are still sleeping.

– We are not like the people here.

– Almost every woman wears a scarf.

– The houses are so English.

– Weather is chilling.

– Engines are running.

120220091255

How much of a home can someone build for you?

Is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun. (Geertz acc Ingold)

By what right do we conventionally identify the artificial with the “Man made”?  (Ingold)

120220091268

Human beings construct the world by virtue of their own conseptions of the possibilities of being. And the possibilities are limited only by the power of the imagination. (Ingold)

I wonder who might live here

Settings and built environments are thought before they are built. (Ingold)

on identity, trajectory, sedentarism and nomadism

Posted by joao on Feb 18, 2009 in theory and concepts

Individual identity, until now mainly linked to the place where one is born, to the native land, is progressively changing to the idea of trajectory. One starts being one’s trajectory.

“The nature of being sedentary and nomadic has changed. […] Sedentary people are at home wherever they go. With their cell phones or laptops, [they are] as comfortable in an elevator or on a plane as in a high-speed train. This is the sedentary person. The nomad, on the other hand, is someone who is never at home, anywhere. ”

Under the Bridge

Posted by zoey on Feb 17, 2009 in uncategorized

Sometimes I feel Like I dont have a partner
Sometimes I feel Like my only friend
Is the city I live in The city of angel
Lonely as I am Together we cry

I drive on her streets cause shes my companion
I walk through her hills cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds And she kisses me windy
I never worry Now that is a lie

I dont ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Its hard to believe That theres nobody out there
Its hard to believe That Im all alone
At least I have her love The city she loves me
Lonely as I am Together we cry

I dont ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Under the bridge downtown Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown I gave my life away…

PS — love it!

Fragment of the lyrics of Winter (by Tori Amos)

Years go by and I’m here still waiting Withering where some snowman was
Mirror mirror where’s the crystal palace
But I only can see myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know dad the ice is getting thin

Halfway home

Posted by lonneke on Feb 17, 2009 in uncategorized

A part of the lyrics from Halfway Home (by TV on the Radio)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4nBwwUufWE

Wild spirits winds from out your chest
Collides with world and wilderness
It needs a gentle hand to call it home

Is it not me?
Am I not rolled into your crush?
The road you choose
Unloads control
See it take me so

Go on throw this stone
Into this halfway home

In every dream home…

Posted by lonneke on Feb 17, 2009 in uncategorized

In Every Dream Home a Heartache (by Roxy Music)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3D2JSBxjzI

In every dream home a heartache
And every step I take
Takes me further from heaven
Is there a heaven?
I`d like to think so
Standards of living
They´re rising daily
But home oh sweet home
It´s only a saying
From bell push to faucet
In smart town apartment
The cottage is pretty
The main house a palace
Penthouse perfection
But what goes on
What to do there
Better pray there

Open plan living
Bungalow ranch style
All of its comforts
Seem so essential
I bought you mail order
My plain wrapper baby
Your skin is like vinyl
The perfect companion
You float my new pool
De luxe and delightful
Inflatable doll
My role is to serve you
Disposable darling
Can´t throw you away now
Immortal and life size
My breath is inside you
I´ll dress you up daily
And keep you till death sighs
Inflatable doll
Lover ungrateful
I blew up your body
But you blew my mind

Oh those heartaches
Dreamhome heartaches

unleashed thoughts from B’ham #4

Posted by joao on Feb 17, 2009 in uncategorized

looking for homely devices

3 Chinese carrying yellow Chinese supermarket bags. Their house is going to feel like home when these bags are opened.

5 or 6 teenagers in their school uniforms. Talking on their cell phones, arranging rendez-vous in Zara, or H&M or the Burger King. The mall is their micro-city. They know its geography to the detail. When asking for directions in the city go to the cab driver. When asking directions in the mall go for the teens.

60, 70, 200 young men from the Maghreb. Someone should tell them how unfashionable those hairstyles are. It’s identity they might argue. Or not. In any case the hairstyle suffers continuous attempts of overcoming its untrendyness. Failled attempts I should say. Lines are drawn in their heads by means of combining non-haired areas with haired ones. The more rebel you are the strangest will be your combination. You overcome. And you still look bad.

1 beautiful young Muslim woman. She overcomes its ethnical/religious artefacts with astonishing style. The scarf matches the purse. Discreetly. The cosmopolitan boots offer her a princess-like walk. She overcomes. She looks beautiful. Followed her for quite a while. I’m very committed to my research work.

la dérive

I went with the flow but soon realised that buildings have a magnetic effect on me. I rejected people and went for the architecture. Magnificent men-made-stone-cement-glass-erected bodies. And then I saw two men “parasiting” the organism. A 21th century beauty. An unconscious amazing dance piece. The flow was forced to stop.

Are you appreciated at work?

Are you made to feel worthwhile?

Are you made to feel part of the team?

Are you highly motivated?

We’re getting active, are you?

I feel that people need to make time to try and understand me.

Telephone.Telephone.Telephone.Telephone.Eat.
