What
Project Thematic
The project will investigate the issues surrounding the concept of home and homelessness, particularly in the context of globalization. Within the framework of political, economic and cultural issues surrounding globalization, case studies of how “home†are constructed vis-à -vis the concept of nation, identity and self will be investigated in this project. Working within the Heideggerian framework, the project will explore the phenomenological concept of home and identity. As in Heidegger’s “Da-sein,†the project will map the varied constructions of home in the “there-ness†(das), and of the self in the “being†(sein).
Research/Guide Questions
- How does globalization influence landscape, the concept of home, and identity? From the environmental perspective to the very personal: e.g. how the sense of home can be attached to one object (for example being without a passport or a key).
- How does “performing†home reaffirm the imagined and/or real home? The sense of belonging that you carry with you as a personal archive, embodied rituals of home.
- Ownership: Does the land own you or do you own the land? We need to imagine the space/landscape and ourselves in it, before being able to claim it or feel at home.
- How does space shapes being, and how does the loss of it means a loss of identity? This can be seen when farmers lose their land, or in employers being laid off due to the economic crisis.
- What are the dialectics between the shaping of the city and homelessness (in architecture and policies).
